The UK’s largest Vintage Fair hits Scotland

Vintage fashion is where designers, celebrities and London’s street savvy fashion warriors find their inspiration. It’s no wonder that The Affordable Vintage Fair is in its 5th year, holding the crown as the UK’s fastest growing vintage shopping event.

On Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st March The Affordable Vintage Fair will roll into Edinburgh and Glasgow for the first time! Set up by former Selfridges stylist Judy Berger, the Fair has toured the UK since 2005 holding events for merchants of vintage clothing and accessories to get together in one space and cater for all the vintage lovers that have come to know the joys of embracing second-hand style.

After paying £2 to get in, which allows you to go in and out as many times as you would like throughout the day, you will be greeted by rails of swinging 60s dresses, 50s teddy girl jumpers, 40s gowns and racks upon racks of stunning clutches, shoulder bags and purses, and dozens of tables laden with piles of trinkets. There will be large menswear stalls selling vintage Barbour jackets for £45, shirts and tweeds from £10. Also, kitsch hand-made jewellery with Alice in Wonderland and Pop Art themes, 50s and 60s Mad men style frocks, Mary Quant tights, and hand made headwear. Newcastle based, award winning Designer Karina Hesketh will be selling her stunning hand made leather bags, each one intricately hand stitched and adorned with vintage fastenings and fabrics.

The Affordable Vintage Fair consists of only the best vintage retailers and traders from cities far and wide. 40 stalls will be offering vintage clothing, accessories & homewares dating from the 1920s – 1980s. All stalls are price checked to reflect huge discounts, on average 40% lower than vintage available on the high street.

The fair has been heralded as a ‘shopping phenomenon’ by the national press and holds regular events in cities including London, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham Oxford and Cambridge. It is also the only event to debut a ‘Dead stock stall’ where vintage clothing dating back to 1970, previously hidden away in a Scottish warehouse will be unearthed, pristine and unused.

Vintage fashion guru Judy Berger is the founder of the event, she said; “Bringing the event to Scotland was a natural progression for us. Over the last two years we’ve seen a huge increase in people coming to our events. People still like the high street but are tired of seeing everyone wearing the same thing. Our events are like treasure chests, you have to dig a little but you end up finding a true gem without having to spend a fortune.”

The Affordable Vintage Fair is an unmissable experience, not only for vintage enthusiasts but for those looking for a genuinely unique day out.

The charity, which is based here in Scotland, began work in 2002 feeding 200 orphans in Malawi; in the last decade the operation has expanded to now providing a daily school dinner for over 375,000 children worldwide. By providing food, Mary’s Meals hopes to increase the number of children who can go to school and learn effectively. An education can set a child free from poverty, not only for this generation but for their children in the future too. It takes as little as £6.15 to feed a child going to school for an entire year in Malawi and on average about £9 to fund each individual child involved in the scheme.

The charity is currently running a campaign called the backpack project, in which people are invited to fill a backpack with things that a child would need to go to school. The Union has had an outbreak of Insanity – Report to the bar between 10pm & 2am on Tuesday 2nd March to be tested for Infection.

With up to 50% of the campus population at risk, stop by the union to ensure you’ve got the all clear!

Insanity infection thermometers will be available from the bar, with exclusive The Crazies merchandise to be won!

You’ll also receive your certified crazy wristband….but be warned, anyone can go crazy at anytime! if your wristband starts to glow, report to the bar for further testing (and prizes).

As the official aftershow party to the band’s show at the o2 Academy, Watkins is sure to bring along the biggest and best tracks of rocking dance, electro and drum & bass, what’s more it’s free entry to all students and their guests.

The QM will be raising money on the night for the DEC Haiti Appeal, so if you see someone painting faces, selling glowsticks or rattling a bucket please consider parting with a couple of quid for a very good cause.

The QM Social Committee is looking for a brand new host for Friday Face-off. If you think you’ve got the talent to fill Nick’s ample shoes (he has big feet, that’s all obviously) you should come along to Social Committee: Tuesdays at 5.30pm in the Board Room on the 3rd floor. We’re a friendly bunch and have great chat every week. You can even get a chance to witness scathing Tuesdays (they’re not a bad as they sound)

Quizzes aren’t all we do so if you’re interested in comedy, Unplugged or even have a great new idea for a new social event, you should come along. We listen to everyone, so you really don’t have an excuse not to come, plus you obviously get to meet the ‘celebrities’ who are the QM’s social event hosts. What more could you want?

Come along to the Social Committee on Tuesdays at 5.30pm in the Board Room if you think you’ve got what it takes.
