FW 2006: Tuesday
Yaaaarrr! It be International Talk Like a Pirate Day, so celebrate with our day-time games. Then rock the night away with our edgy club night Revolution with DJ Martin Bate (XFM). Hell is for Heroes and Brigade provide some live action early in the evening.
DJ Martin Bate (XFM) will be playing the best rock, metal, emo, and punk that will have you dancing all night long: there’s bound to be something here you’ll love. Our clubnight won’t be the most hardcore night you’ll ever go to, but it will definately let you enjoy some great music including Hell is for Heroes and Brigade.
Hell is for Heroes have come a long way from their inauguration in 2000, from hopeless wage-slave outcasts to hardcore superstars. From their earliest shows their passion and dedication was evident, and their debut album The Neon Handshake was greeted with near-unanimous praise. It had the rage of a lot of fresh-faced hardcore bands of the time, sure, but it never felt empty or posturing, and they always remembered to balance their anger with a bit of fist-in-the-air euphoria.
2005 saw the release of the follow-up, Transmit Disrupt, “the strongest and most glorious fuck you of the year” (Rocksound), with a bit of help from hugely influential producers Pelle Henricsson & Eskil Lvstrm (Refused, Poison the Well). Staying true to their hardcore roots, they released the album on their own label, and filled it with revolutionary zeal and unbridled passion. With a ludicrously dedicated fanbase and a third album in the works, Hell is for Heroes look like they’re on the path to even bigger things. Seeing them live is an unbelievably cathartic experience – this is an opportunity that can’t be missed.
Nominated for a Kerrang! award, Brigade are unique and compelling, and difficult to pigeonhole. Their album Lights has been described as one of the defining albums of 2006: unsurprising, considering each song is full of the passion and energy of a band clearing the way through a slightly-undefined genre of rock that isn’t indie, emo, or pop. Touring with Fightstar, Hidden in Plain View, Hundred Reasons and Biffy Clyro has shown critics and fans alike how powerful their fast and furious melodies can be. If you want a more refreshing approach to rock music, then it’s definitely worth listening to these musicians who have proved time and again that they are even better live.
Pirate Games
We be playing many a game in Jim’s Bar, matey (www.talklikeapirate.com). There’ll be the classic pop-up pirate, some quiz rounds, a good dose of banter, and it wouldn’t be the same without some dressing up clothes. Bring your eyepatch, wooden leg and sense of humour. Arr!
STAG
Relax with some light comedy and theatrical entertainment as Student Theatre at Glasgow take to the stage.
Have I got Views for You
Unsurprisingly, a blatant rip-off of Have I Got News For You. Watch celebrities battle it out in a debate of epic proportions with their wit and charm.
Treasure Hunt
We’ll have you running about campus getting clues, picking up treasure and finding the QM fugitive who’s destined to walk the plank. Winners will get a bottle of rum, true pirate style.
