FW 2006: Monday
Freshers’ Week 2006 kicks off on Monday 18th September. So what do we have in-store for you on the first day? We kick off in style with the not-to-be-missed headline act The Automatic, supported by award-winning Parka. The evening is then topped off with a set from Subcity DJs, setting the tone for the week. Remember you need a freshers’ pass for these events, so make sure you get one.
This is the second time that The Automatic have played the QM recently – they passed through earlier this year as part of the NME New Bands tour 2006, firmly placing themselves as one of the bands to watch from now on. They’ve already started to live up to this potential – their single Monster got to #4 in the UK charts (after reaching #23 the week before, on downloads alone), and their album, Not Accepted Anywhere, did one better, getting to #3 in June.
The Automatic have been playing together since they were five years old, seeking for a way to escape their dull small-town Welsh existence. At the age of 16, they were faced with the decision of finding a job or going to college: they chose something else. After a series of shows with The Ordinary Boys and Hard-Fi, they found nationwide acclaim, signing to B-Unique, home of The Kaiser Chiefs and Aqualung. The success is sure to continue as they embark on their UK tour.
Parka
This band traverse the ever-decreasing canyon between punk and indie. They’ve won awards from the Zane Lowe show, and are ridiculously energetic. There’s dozens of things happening in each song, including the odd bit of ska.
Subcity Radio presents a psychedelic mash up of indie & rock with Paul Needles and Rock’n’ Roll Meltdown V Solar Island DJs.
STAG
Student Theatre at Glasgow will be on stage performing a new comedy for some light-hearted entertainment.
