freshers’ week links

If you’re just coming up to the University of Glasgow then you’ll probably want as much information as possible on Freshers’ Week. We’ve dug out a few handy links for you to read, which should help you on your way.

The first stop in the road is to get your Freshers’ Pass, which will get you access to all the evening entertainment that is on offer. The pass is £30, which is a bargin for five nights entertainment. You can find more information on the pass on the official university freshers’ week site. You should also get this information in the post. If you are only at University during the day (more likely if you are a home student) then you can get access to both Unions for free, it’s just the bands, DJs, comedy and parties that require a pass.

The second stop is to find out what’s on. There are several organisations providing stuff to do during Freshers’ Week:

The University will have a programme of events to get you orientated. This programme is known as “Welcome 2006″. This includes registrations, inductions, and “settling-in” type events. Some of it is important, some of it only applies to certain people, some of it is just if you’re interested.

The SRC (Student Rep. Council) organise a few events, and the night-busses home after the evening entertainments. They will provide general directions and guidance. You can find out more about the council on www.glasgowstudent.net. Worth a read, but most of the real action happens at the Unions during Freshers’ Week.

The Sports Association (GUSA) organise sport club taster sessions during the week. If you’re a sporty-type, or just want to get fit at Uni then check out the GUSA website, or find a GUSA helper.

Glasgow is fortunate enough to have two student unions. The Unions provide the majority of entertainments during freshers’ week. If there is one thing to remember it’s stay on campus for freshers’ week. The clubs in town will try and tempt you, but town exists all the time – you only get one freshers’ week at Uni. The Unions have entertainments on both during the day and night. Night time is for Freshers’ Pass holders, and includes just about every time of entertainment you want. The two Unions are the Queen Margaret Union (which is what this blog is about), and the Glasgow University Union (GUU). Check here or the official QM website for further details, or the GUU Website.

All the details of Freshers’ Week at the QMU will be available on this site in the Freshers’ Week 2006 section. You should read through that, and check the Google Calendar for an idea of what’s on.
